Our orphanage, provides accommodation, emotional support, nutrition, health care and education for 13 children. When provided with opportunity and a nurturing environment, CEN is confident that the children will develop into happy, independent and valuable citizens of society. We believe that the personal and professional success of every child from our orphanage will become a model for all disadvantaged children, reinforcing the value of our projects.
Background
The orphanage was established in 2002 as a reaction to political violence in the village of Jogimara. Some of the current children at the orphanage are from the families of this village who experienced the same tragedy. While working as laborers on a construction project in Kalikat district of western Nepal, the fathers and/or older brothers of these children were killed in a clash between government forces and Maoists. For more information, please read the following article.
Since men are typically the only source of income in a Nepali household, this loss became not only a tremendous emotional loss, but also an extreme financial hardship for the mothers and their children.
CEN decided to help this community and therefore set-up the orphanage to offer these children an opportunity for a better life. CEN believes all children deserve the right to have access to food and shelter, a loving home environment, access to education and the opportunity to develop as an individual. A child who does not have these things, is considered an “orphan” in the eyes of CEN and therefore welcome in the orphanage.
Location
The orphanage is located in the residential neighborhood of Naya Bazar, Kathmandu (approximately 20 minute walk from Thamel). It is on the 2nd floor of a fairly new building with pleasant facilities. There are two bedrooms (one for the four girls and one for the eight boys), a kitchen with dining area, a common room used for studying and playing games, a bathroom and a small office.
